FAQ

What is Hoosier Dog Trainer’s training approach?
Dogs are individuals with different personalities and learning styles. That is taken into account and the training is tailored to each dog and to each family. HDT does not believe in a “cookie cutter” approach or that there is only one way to train a dog. What may have worked with a neighbor’s dog or the last dog we trained may not work for yours. We will work on the best way to train your dog.
Why Board and Train?
It saves you time! In group lessons, you are committed to weeks of classes. Then you have to find enough time to practice with your dog every day before the next class. Who’s got time for that?

* Your dog learns faster! Because we will work with your dog multiple times per day, your dog will learn behaviors in a matter of days that otherwise would take weeks of classes.

* Your dog gets individual attention! Can you imagine teaching 10-20 toddlers to walk at the same time? It is the same thing with obedience. It is difficult for a dog to learn in an environment with 10-20 other dogs.

* Training is tailored to your dog! People are individually unique and so are dogs. Because Hoosier Dog Trainer works with each dog “one on one” we can adjust the training to match your dog’s personality, temperament and learning style.

At what age should we begin training?
Training really begins the minute you pick up your new family member by setting expectations and letting them know what is and is not acceptable. The old saying is, “There is always dog training going on. It is just a matter of who is training whom!”

Private Puppy Preschool is a great place to start before a puppy reaches 16 weeks old. Some dogs are ready to begin obedience training as early as 16 weeks. During the consultation/evaluation we can advise you as to whether your dog is ready begin obedience training.

Will my dog obey me if you have done all the training?
Absolutely! Police K9’s are usually not trained by their handlers. Drug detecting dogs are normally trained outside the law enforcement agency where they serve. Assistance dogs for those with physical challenges are trained before they are handed over to those they assist. Yet all of these dogs perform the tasks they have learned for people who did not train them.

The key is training the owners in addition to the dogs. You get that at Hoosier Dog Trainer. Manners Camp includes three lessons with you after your dog has completed training and a program to reinforce the training when you get home.

How much does your training cost?
Hoosier Dog Trainer has programs and options to meet most budgets. The advantage of working individually with a trainer is that your dog will be trained with his/her personality type, behavior issues and family goals in mind. The dog learns faster and more thoroughly, making this kind of training more cost effective.

There are program discounts for training multiple dog simultaneously, having previous dogs trained at Hoosier Dog Trainer, and for shelter/rescue dogs that have been adopted in the past 30 days. Ask details in your consultation/evaluation session.
